If Afghans don't help they will starve to death: PM

 


ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Saturday that millions of Afghans will starve to the brink of starvation if the international community does not provide immediate humanitarian relief.

He called on the international community to help the Afghan people in accordance with the United Nations Principle of Responsibility for Security (R2P).

In a message on his Twitter account, the Prime Minister said, "There is an urgency to the international community, as well as their obligation to the United Nations Principle of Responsibility (R2P) adopted unanimously for the project, to millions of people." To provide immediate humanitarian relief. Afghans on the verge of starvation."

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday asked Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin to take steps to ease the economic well-being of the urban lower and middle class population affected by imported inflation.

In this regard, the Prime Minister spoke to Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin over phone and inquired about his health.

During the talks, the Premier congratulated the Finance Minister and his team on achieving 5.37% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in three years, leading to the creation of substantial jobs and increased per capita income.

The Prime Minister highlighted that international economic organizations such as Bloomberg and The Economist have recognized Pakistan's successful economic reforms and initiatives taken during the COVID pandemic saving jobs and lives.

A statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office said the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister have been regularly discussing the ongoing global commodity price supercycle, which has adversely affected inflation and trade deficit in Pakistan.

The Finance Minister has informed the Prime Minister that local food prices have been declining since December as reflected in the SPI. However, he expects that as international prices come down, the pressure on imported goods will also ease. Overall, the Prime Minister expressed satisfaction over tax collection, exports and remittances.
