Pakistan records 7,978 fresh COVID-19 cases amid fifth wave


 ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has detected 7,978 new infections in the last 24 hours, National Command and Operation Centers (NCOC) data showed on Sunday morning, with the country's active COVID-19 case count crossing 100,000 for the second day in a row. Between the current wave between the points .

The fresh cases came after 64,016 diagnostic tests were conducted overnight across Pakistan.

According to NCOC data, the new cases pushed the positivity ratio across the country to 12.46% after a slight drop seen in the past few days.

Meanwhile, the number of confirmed cases reported so far rose to 1,417,991, while the number of active cases stands at 100,005.

According to the NCOC, Pakistan's number of active cases crossed the one lakh mark for the first time on Saturday, when 104,095 cases were reported in the country. However, the tally was reduced as 12,019 patients suffering from COVID-19 were cured overnight.

Meanwhile, 29 patients succumbed to the coronavirus during the last 24 hours, taking the country's COVID-19 death toll to 29,248.

The NCOC has extended coronavirus restrictions in the country from January 31 to February 15, as thousands of people continue to contract the infection amid the spread of the Omicron variant.

The NCOC had imposed the Non-Pharmaceutical Intervention (NPI) on 19 January, which was to be reviewed on 27 January in the light of the COVID-19 situation in the country.

Restrictions for the marriage sector were already in place till February 15.
