French actor Gaspard Uliel, who appeared in Marvel's upcoming TV series Moon Knight, has died at the age of 37.
He died on Wednesday after a skiing accident in the Alps, his family told AFP news agency.
One of France's best-known actors, Ulil has appeared in It's Only the End of the World and the French fashion designer's biopic Saint Laurent.
The actor was skiing in the Savoie area on Tuesday when he collided with another person.
He suffered a severe brain stroke and was taken to a hospital in Grenoble, where he died the next day.
The other skier was not admitted to the hospital and is now under investigation.
News of his death came just a day after the trailer for Moon Knight, in which he starred as Midnight Man, was released online.
'Quite magnetism'
French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire tweeted: "French cinema is missing out on a huge talent full of charm and energy."
Writer and critic Casper Salmon also paid tribute to Uliel, describing him as "an actor of considerable magnetism, talent and beauty who had already built an impressive and varied career".
Along with being a movie star, Uliel also appeared as a model. As the face of the Bleu de Chanel fragrance, she was cast for a 2010 television commercial directed by Martin Scorsese.
Born just outside Paris in 1984, Uliel has appeared on screen since the age of 11, but gained international acclaim for his performance as a young Hannibal in 2007's Hannibal Rising.
He won Best Actor César - the French equivalent of the Oscar - in 2017 for his performance in It's Only the End of the World alongside Marion Cotillard and Le Seydoux.
In 2005, he won the Most Promising Actor Award for his performance in the World War One drama A Very Long Engagement, which also starred Audrey Tautou.
Saint Laurent, one of two 2014 biopics about French designer Yves Saint Laurent, was one of the films in competition for the top prize at that year's Cannes Film Festival.
Ulil was praised for his performance, but lost to Pierre Nini in the latter Caesar - star of a rival film named Yves Saint Laurent.
"Broken heart," tweeted Naini after hearing the news of her fellow actor's death. "Gaspard was benevolence and kindness. Beauty and brilliance."
In a 2014 interview with IndieWire, Ulil talked about the differences between the two films.
"I waited till my shoot was over to look for another film," he said. “I remember getting to the theater was very nervous, and very quickly relieved when I realized how different they are. They are two different scenes, two movies that never really meet. .
"So in a way, it's legitimate for both films to exist. Perhaps it's the best way to celebrate the diversity of an iconic figure like Saint Laurent.
"I think Pierre Naini did a great job and I was relieved that he was proposing something quite different from what he had decided to do."
He said he decided to "take some distance with reality in the preparation process" and "nurture this character" with elements of his own life and personality.
Uliel was bitten by a dog as a child, and later said she felt the scar helped her in her life and career because it looked like a dimple.
He is survived by his young son and his girlfriend, model and singer Gaul Pietri.
