Over 28.9 million porn TikTok videos blocked: PTA

Peshawar: More than 28.9 million obscene TikTok videos have been removed, while over 1.465 million accounts were blocked for sharing such content, local media reported.

The details emerged in a written judgment issued by the Peshawar High Court where the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) shared data on action against pornographic videos on the short video application.

The PHC, in its written order, said that youth are getting influenced by pornographic material on Tiktok and it has come to their notice that action is being taken against such content on social media platforms.

The order highlighted that those who shared the content have refrained from taking action against them and are involved in re-sharing such content due to lack of accountability for their acts.

The court directed the PTA to devise a mechanism so that those involved in sharing obscene material can be debarred from the application.

The PHC bench also appreciated the measures adopted by the PTA to check the obscene material and directed it to continue in a more systematic manner.

On March 12, 2021, the Peshawar High Court (PHC) ordered a ban on the short video sharing entertainment app.

The court directed the Pakistan Telecom Authority to block the app "unless some mechanism is devised to filter unethical and obscene content and goes against our norms and ethics."

On 22 June, the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) told the PHC that the authority had removed 9.8 million videos containing immoral content on TikTok and also blocked 720,000 accounts that uploaded such content.

Sharing details with a Peshawar High Court (PHC) bench headed by Chief Justice Kaiser Rashid Khan in a matter related to removal of immoral content from TikTok, the authority's director [technical] said that following his actions, TikTok has Appointed a focal person for Pakistan for the first time.
