Karachi: Quetta Gladiators suffered a setback on Wednesday when former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi requested the franchise management to release him for medical and personal reasons, just a day before the start of the Pakistan Super League.
The flamboyant batsman has asked Quetta Gladiators to forgive him from the bio-secure bubble, Geo News reported on Wednesday.
Sources familiar with the matter told media outlets that Afridi has told the management that he is suffering from back pain and that his sister-in-law has passed away.
"Shahid Afridi's children are alone at home [...] and it is for these reasons that he wants to break out of the bio-secure bubble," the sources said.
The much-anticipated tournament is all set to begin at the National Stadium in Karachi tomorrow - and it is unfortunate to see that a player who has played many matches in the city may not get a chance to play his farewell match.
