The Philadelphia Eagles ended the 2021 campaign with a formidable attack from the top-order in football. He ran for 2,715 yards on the ground, or 159.7 per game—and kept Miles Sanders fresh on the running back depth chart with multiple injuries.
Sanders has gone electric when he is healthy, but his frequent illnesses are starting to become an issue. The former second-rounder has two years left on his rookie deal, so it's time for the Eagles and Sanders to come to the negotiating table. Will Howie Rosman give the injury-prone starter a long-term extension? Perhaps. It's definitely something to keep an eye on this summer.
Or maybe the team starts looking elsewhere. Jordan Howard and Boston Scott are both free agents and have no players locked in for a return in 2022. Thanks to a fifth round of investment in last year's draft, Kenny Gainwell is here to stay. All four of them made a big contribution in the last season.
"Really excited to be able to have them all on deck," Siriani told reporters on January 14. "I was saying to the team after practice, what a great contribution we've got from so many different people this year, and I really talked about the running group. What other teams could say they got four? Got contributions from different running backs?"
Given Miles Sanders injury history, Philly should be looking to upgrade their depth at RB. One high-end option: Cordarrelle Patterson, a four-time All-Pro who racked up 1,166 total yards in 2021. Rumors have him getting 2 years at $12 million in free agency. #Eagles #FlyEaglesFly

Jason Huntley is another interesting name to watch, especially since the 2020 fifth-rounder remains under contract through 2023. If those five players aren't good enough, options abound in free agency where Philly is expected to be very active.
Eagles Free Agency: Top 5 Running Backs
1. - Melvin Gordon: The Eagles clearly like the two-time pro bowler as they attempted to trade for him long ago. He will turn 29 in April, which is too old to run, though a four-game holdout in 2019 saved some running on those bald tyres. Gordon rushed for 918 yards and eight touchdowns last season to bring his career total to 6,144 yards and 53 touchdowns. Definitely worth a phone call.
Did a little digging around on the Melvin Gordon trade market. To give you an idea of where it is, only offer I came across was from Philly.

In that deal, Jordan Howard would go to LA, the teams would swap mid-round picks, and the Chargers would eat salary. LA obviously said no.
2. David Johnson: The All-Pro has fallen off a cliff once since leaving Arizona in 2020. And, honestly, he was already in decline before that non-sense trade. But the 30-year-old is sized (6-foot-1, 225 pounds) and will be cheap. He has 4,047 yards and 39 touchdowns in seven seasons. Johnson could be the perfect goal-line if Jordan Howard is shown the door.

3. Cordarelle Patterson: Arguably the best running on the market, Patterson can get teams swoon on their feet and bring Brinks trucks to their doors. He's a four-time All-Pro, as well as a four-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion—yet with greats in this position, not to mention the ultimate hybrid weapon. It's about to change. If Pro Football Focus had estimated that Patterson might be hired for two years for $12 million, the Eagles would be mad not to sign him. They should offer more than that.
Report: Cordarrelle Patterson's free agency "will be interesting" and "if someone steps up with a deal in the $7 million per year range, it will be hard for Atlanta to match that” says @TheAthletic

4. Raheem Mostart: This can be an opportunity to correct a past wrong. Remember, the Eagles released Mostart coming out of training camp in 2015. He burst onto the scene for the San Francisco 49ers during the 2019 Super Bowl run, which included 220 rushing yards and four touchdowns in the NFC Championship Game. Unfortunately, he has been battling injury after injury over the past two seasons. Maybe the high school track-and-field star has something left to prove in the familiar area code.
5. Rashaad Penny: Another person who has struggled with injuries in recent years is preferred for a good pay day. Penny (5-foot-11, 220 pounds) hauled for a career-high 749 yards and six touchdowns in 2021, while serving as the lead back at Seattle. There is talk of the Seahawks tagging him as a franchise. If not, a great insurance policy would be for former first-rounder Miles Sanders.
