The Saints, NFL, and Black Head Coaching Candidates

The NFL has a problem with recruiting minority coaches. Had it not been so, the strengthening of the Rooney Rule in 2020 to encourage owners to have a "fair workplace and diverse recruiting practice" would not have been established by the league. Yet, owners who opened head coaching in 2020 and 2021 failed to comply. New Orleans had Sean Peyton for 16 seasons.

A credit to Mickey Loomis and the head coaching search team, he interviewed several minority candidates – Brian Flores, Eric Bienemy, Byron Leftwich, and Aaron Glenn were minority interviewees. Dennis Allen won the job. I believe in many ways, he earned the job while serving as interim head coach and overtaking Tampa Bay.

Unfortunately, New Orleans has a questionable track record of not hiring a minority head coach. They were joined by the Bills, Cowboys, Commanders, Falcons, Giants, Jaguars, Panthers, Rams, Ravens, Seahawks, Titans and Patriots, who never had a black head coach. Should Dennis Allen have a longer stint with the Saints, no black or minority head coach will be at Metairie for some time. By that time the face of coaching may have changed. Presumably, executive leadership in New Orleans could very well change.

The league has several female assistant coaches. Can anyone have a chance to become the head coach? Yes. But for now, where there are 70% of black players on the NFL roster, owners must come to terms and submit more men who represent the faces of those men on the playing field.
