Angelina Jolie recounts war crimes amid Putin attacks on Ukraine
Angelina Jolie is touching the basic rules of war as thousands die in Ukraine.
Taking to her Instagram on Friday, the actress shared key highlights from the 1949 Geneva Conventions, addressing the do's and don'ts of war.
"Over the past 60 years, civilians have been the main victims of war. Thousands of civilians have been killed. Others have no food, water, heat or shelter. Millions have been forced to flee their homes," she would begin. It's caption.
"Both soldiers and civilians are protected under the Geneva Conventions. Attempts to limit the damage caused by war and reduce suffering."
Jolie noted the 4 Geneva conventions.
"Protects the sick, injured, medical and religious personnel during conflict
"Care for the Wounded, Sick and Shipwrecked in Battle at Sea"
"Treat prisoners of war with humanity
"Protect all civilians, including those living in the occupied territory
"From these conventions comes the rule of war. They are universal. All sides in conflict must abide by them.
Jolie then sheds light on some of the 'basic rules' of war and how breaking them is a war crime.
"Citizens can never be targeted"
"The sick and the injured have a right to care - no matter what side they
"Medical and support personnel must be protected
"What citizens need to survive - such as food and water - should not be denied or destroyed
"Prisoners should be treated fairly. They should not be tortured or abused
"Weapons that cause excessive or unintended damage must be limited
"Rape and other forms of sexual violence are expressly prohibited.
