BJP MP among 51 persons booked

ISLAMABAD: Clashes broke out in the suburbs of Mumbai over the question of naming a public park after martyr Tipu Sultan.

According to a report, a day after the BJP protest, activists of the other two extremist Hindu outfits Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal also opposed naming a public park after Tipu Sultan in suburban Malwani area.

The police on Thursday registered two FIRs against 51 people. The names of BJP MP Gopal Shetty, Mumbai BJP President Mangal Prabhat Lodha and MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar are included in the FIR.

The protesters had opposed the alleged naming of the garden after the 18th-century Mysore Muslim ruler who fought valiantly against the British invaders, claiming that Tipu Sultan had persecuted Hindus.

But Congress leader and Maharashtra minister Aslam Shaikh, who inaugurated facilities in the renovated garden, claimed that it was named after Tipu Sultan several years ago.

The FIR alleged that the protesters gathered illegally and assaulted policemen. An official said the police pressed the "Epidemic Diseases Act" and the "Disaster Management Act" against the accused; Work was underway to add further investigations.
