Over 7,000 fresh COVID-19 infections in Pakistan, 21 deaths in 24 hours

 


ISLAMABAD: With 7,048 daily COVID-19 infections, Pakistan recorded over 100,000 active cases of the virus for the third day in a row, as the fifth wave of the pandemic continues to spread across the country, according to the National Command and Operations Data Centre. (NCOC) showed Monday morning.

According to the latest official data, the new infections detected during the last 24 hours after 61,077 diagnostic tests were conducted across the country put Pakistan's positivity rate at 11.53% and the confirmed case count at 1.425 million.

Meanwhile, 21 more patients succumbed to the disease during the last 24 hours, taking the nationwide death toll to 29,269.

Apart from this, the condition of 1,423 coronavirus patients is said to be critical.

The NCOC has extended coronavirus restrictions in the country from January 31 to February 15, as thousands of people continue to contract the infection amid the spread of the Omicron variant.

The Forum had imposed Non-Pharmaceutical Intervention (NPI) on 19 January, which was to be reviewed on 27 January in the light of the COVID-19 situation in the country.

Restrictions for the marriage sector were already in place till February 15.

Cities with more than 10% COVID-19 positivity

While the nationwide coronavirus situation remains grim, Peshawar is currently the city most affected by the fifth wave driven by Omicron, with a 39.63% COVID-19 positivity rate. Meanwhile, Mardan of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recorded 31.08% positivity, which is the second highest nationwide.
