Yorkshire appoint Ottis Gibson as coach after racism scandal

English cricket club Yorkshire has appointed former West Indies all-rounder Ottis Gibson as the new head coach on a three-year deal, replacing 52-year-old Andrew Gayle, who left the county club along with the rest of the coaching staff. A damning racism scandal.

LONDON: English cricket club Yorkshire on Wednesday announced that they have appointed former West Indies all-rounder Ottis Gibson as their new head coach on a three-year deal.

The 52-year-old replaces Andrew Gayle, who left the county club along with the rest of the coaching staff due to a hurtful racism scandal.

Former Pakistan-born bowler Azeem Rafique accused Yorkshire of failing to adequately deal with racial abuse while playing for him and told a parliamentary inquiry that it had ended his career.

The sponsors broke ties with the county and were suspended from holding lucrative international matches at Headingley.

Gibson, who has previously been the head coach of West Indies and South Africa as well as serving as bowling coach for England, is the latest new addition to a much changed backroom staff at Headingley.

He will officially start work at the end of February, ending with the joining of Pakistan Super League side Multan Sultans.

Gibson will report to former England pacer Darren Gough, who has been appointed interim managing director of cricket.

Club president Kamlesh Patel, who was appointed in November, said: "The character of Otis and his commitment to buy into the process we are going through at Yorkshire County Cricket Club shone through in our discussions.

"He is someone I know who will encourage dialogue and help foster a clubbing culture, while also supporting and developing the world-class talent we have here and taking them to the next level."

Gibson said he was "honoured" to be appointed.

"This is one of the most coveted roles in English county cricket and I am really looking forward to working with this talented group of players to take the club forward," he added.
