Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Koster-Waldau puts himself back on the ice for Netflix's Against the Ice
Winter may have been over for Nikolaj Koster-Waldau when Game of Thrones ended in 2019, but the Danish star found himself back on the ice for his latest adventure, Against the Ice.
As The Associated Press reports, the film, which is now available on Netflix, follows the wild saga of Denmark's Eznar Mikkelsen, a captain, explorer, and writer who, a few years ago, collected maps and magazines from a failed Artic expedition. Was set to recover in 1909. ,
At stake was the dispute over Northeast Greenland, which was claimed by the United States and which the Dutch were trying to invalidate by proving that Greenland was an island.
Mikkelsen had only his sled dog and an inexperienced companion for the mission, which became more complicated.
This is a project that Koster-Waldau has been with for almost a decade. A friend from school, director Peter Flinth, sent Mickelson's book To Against the Ice to consider.
Flinth heard about it from Queen Margrethe II of Denmark who told Flinth that it could make a good film. Coster-Waldau agreed and not only did he act: he also co-wrote the script with his longtime friend and collaborator Joe Derrick.
“It was a long journey. It was a complicated book to adapt,” said Koster-Waldau, 51, in a recent interview.
“I have always loved survival stories, explorers who go to unknown places. Exciting enough. But what really caught me here was an unusual combination,” he said.
Koster-Waldau said: "Usually the two men would have had similar ambitions and hopes, but here one of them was a famous explorer and the other was literally just a mechanic. That's what really saved them, that they were so different."
Game of Thrones took a lot of air in the culture when it went on, but Coster-Waldau has always known that there is life outside of Jaime Lannister.
It was on a trip where he found out he had lost out on the lead role in John Carter that he learned that he had booked a pilot about dragons. Although it didn't seem like it at the time, it was in the best possible condition.
Game of Thrones brought stability and fame and made him a household name in America, but even during its eight-season run, he was always doing other projects.
“I love acting. I love getting a job as an actor,” he said. “But what we are doing now is so much fun and interesting, just getting involved from the beginning of a story and helping to build it To do." - AP
