Elton John reveals 'I knew my lifestyle was crazy and bad'
Iconic British singer Sir Elton John credits teenage AIDS victim Ryan White and his family for saving his life.
On Friday, the Grammy-winning singer told the crowd at her concert at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis that spending time with White's family has made a difference in her life. White was from Indiana.
"I knew my lifestyle was crazy and out of order. And six months later, I was sober and clean and have been ever since," said John, who recently celebrated his milestone 75th birthday.
He said White's family was a catalyst for change for him. "I can't thank him enough, because without him, I probably would have died," the singer said, reported WTHR-TV.
White died in Indianapolis on April 8, 1990, at the age of 18. He contracted HIV years ago through a tainted blood transfusion.
His mother, Jean White-Ginder, continues to share a close relationship with John, who acknowledged his presence at the concert. "I love you very much," said John. "Thank you for all you have done for me. This song is for you." He then began playing Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me.
