Bradley Cooper opens up about past cocaine addiction: 'So lost'


Will Arnett said that friend Bradley Cooper went through a "metamorphosis" and was a "realization" that inspired lifelong changes that "opened you up and allowed you to be who you are".

Bradley Cooper is revealing the depth of his long battle with cocaine addiction and why he decided to sober up.

The A Star Is Born actor opened up about realizing the "drugs and alcohol problem" while appearing on Amazon Music and Wondery's Smartless podcast, which is hosted by Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes.

"I was very lost and I was addicted to cocaine—that was another thing," he said, adding that "I had my Achilles tendon healed after I removed the alias and with "zero self-esteem." struggled.

He continued, "When I was 29, I had the advantage of that incident. I thought I had made it when I got a Wendy's ad. Didn't feel like it, went to Los Angeles for Elias. Felt like I was back in high school."

He said, "I couldn't go to a club, no girl wanted to see me. I was completely depressed. It wasn't really even The Hangover. I was 36 when I had The Hangover, so I had to I had to go through all those things before fame came into my existence on a daily basis. So all that happened before that."

Arnett, 52, called Pal Cooper's realization of the actor's "metamorphosis" addiction a level of fame before spring-boarding 2009's The Hangover. Arnett said, "Having those realizations and having that change allowed you—that's what opened you up and allowed you to be who you are."

Arnett said he saw a "difference" in Cooper, adding, "It was great to see you in this place and to see you at ease. Nothing made me happy." Getting emotional, Arnett said, "I'm glad to see you so happy with who you are."
