Queen Elizabeth's youngest Prince Edward and his wife Sophie were reportedly stuck on a flight with technical issues en route to Gibraltar, forcing them to return to the UK.
According to Express UK, the Earl and Countess of Wessex were on their way from the UK to the Rock, where they were to arrive for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.
However, technical issues were reported during his British Airways flight, forcing him to take a U-turn and return to the UK.
The Governor of Gibraltar confirmed the incident, saying: "There has been a slight delay in the arrival of the Earl and Countess of Wessex in Gibraltar, as their flight was returned safely to the UK due to a technical problem."
"Alternative arrangements are being made for His Royal Highness's arrival in Gibraltar today and the schedule will be adjusted accordingly," his statement added.
A replacement plane was being arranged for the royal couple, according to Gibraltar's national broadcaster, with GBC News sharing timely updates on Twitter.
The British Airways Press Office reported that the GBC pilots on Flight 490 decided to return to Heathrow as a precaution due to a minor technical issue and the aircraft landed normally. This was arranging for a replacement aircraft to operate the flight. Has been there and thanks the customers for their patience,” the account tweeted.
At the time of this article, Prince Edward and Sophie reportedly made a safe landing in Gibraltar after a delay of about five hours.
