Winona Ryder recalls her struggling time in the '90s after their split
Winona Ryder has opened up about the "tough times" she faced in the '90s after her split with Johnny Depp in 1993.
In a recent interview with Harper's Bazaar, the Stranger Things star revealed that her life took a dark turn following her public breakup with the Pirates of the Caribbean actor, mainly due to the harsh Hollywood culture. She was reportedly engaged to Depp for three years.
After their split, the actress worked with a therapist at the time, who "encouraged her to be kind to her younger self" as she recovered from her pain.
"I remember playing this character who is tortured in a Chilean prison," she told the outlet, describing her character in the 1994 film adaptation of Isabel Allende's The House of the Spirits.
Ryder said, "I would see these fake bruises and cuts on my face, and I would struggle to see myself as this little girl. 'Will you treat this girl the way you treat yourself? Huh?'
The Girl, Interrupted actress recalled seeing herself and said, "This is what I'm doing inside myself. Because I just wasn't taking care of myself."
Ryder further revealed about his personality, saying, "This part of me is very personal. I have such a place in my heart for those days. But for someone young who grew up with social media, It's hard to describe."
According to Metro, Ryder supported Depp in a 2020 defamation case against The Sun, which called the actor "a wife-killer in a story."
Reportedly, the Edward Scissorhands actress described Depp as an "incredibly loving, extremely caring boy" in her witness statement.
