Kanye West faces legal action for using Marshall Jefferson song

Kanye West reportedly used part of Jefferson's song at least 22 times on his track Flower

Kanye West was sued Wednesday for allegedly sampling Marshall Jefferson's 1986 hit "Move Your Body" on Donda 2 without permission.

The 45-year-old rapper, producer and entrepreneur reportedly used part of Jefferson's song on his track Flowers at least 22 times.

Kanye, who has legally changed his name to Yeh, released Donda 2 exclusively through his Stem player in February.

Ultra International Music Publishing took legal action against the rapper and filed a complaint in the US District Court in New York on Wednesday.

Jefferson hails from Kanye's hometown of Chicago and performed in Glastonbury last weekend. Their song Move Your Body was released in 1986 by Trax Records and reached number 34 on Billboard's Dance Singles Sales chart.

"I've been sampled a thousand times. There's a right way and a wrong way to go about it," house music pioneer Radio 1 tells Newsbeat.

"It's disappointing to be done without approval by another artist, a black artist, a fellow Chicagoan."

According to the lawsuit, Kanye and his team discussed with representatives from Jefferson, where they admitted to sampling Move Your Body in Flowers. But it claims that the rapper didn't take the license - which would mean that Jefferson was paid to use his tracks.
