Coronavirus in Pakistan: Active cases cross 100,000 for the first time since July 2020


 ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's active coronavirus cases crossed the 100,000 mark for the first time since July 1, 2020, when 7,963 new cases were reported in the country, National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) data showed on Saturday morning.

7,963 new cases were registered in the last 24 hours after 70,389 tests were conducted. The number of active cases stood at 104,095.

The country registered a positivity rate of 11.31%. This is the third consecutive day in Pakistan that the positivity ratio has been recorded above 11%.

Meanwhile, NCOC data shows that 27 deaths due to COVID-19 took the death toll to 29,219.

Official data shows that with the detection of new cases, the total number of positive cases has risen to 1.41 million.

The NCOC counted the total recoveries at 1,276,719. However, 1,375 patients are in critical care.

It is pertinent to mention here that the NCOC has extended the coronavirus restrictions in the country from January 31 to February 15, as thousands of people continue to contract the infection amid the spread of the Omicron variant.

The NCOC had imposed the Non-Pharmaceutical Intervention (NPI) on 19 January, which was to be reviewed on 27 January in the light of the COVID-19 situation in the country.

Restrictions for the marriage sector were already in place till February 15.
