OCCUPIED AL-QUDS: Israel's cabinet voted on Sunday to set up a formal investigation into a 2012 naval purchase that accused former military officers and close aides of former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu on corruption charges.
Netanyahu has not been personally accused of wrongdoing in the so-called "submarine case", which relates to a multi-billion shekel deal to acquire naval ships from German industrial giant Thyssenkrupp.
Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, who ousted Netanyahu in June, reportedly did not participate in the vote to set up an investigation, citing concerns that it would interfere with military purchases. In tweets before the cabinet approved the investigation, Foreign Minister Yair Lapid called the submarine case "the most serious security corruption case in Israel's history. It is necessary to turn every stone to reach the truth." Defense Minister Benny Gantz was also a strong supporter of the investigation.
