Khairpur court summons Arab 'guest' to hunt bustards


 SUKKUR: The District and Sessions Court, Khairpur has summoned an Arab prince, his staff and the SHO of the area to hunt the protected species of Hubara bustard on January 26, citing a petition filed by a local resident.

Petitioner Raza Hussain, a resident of Khairpur, had approached the District and Sessions Court, Khairpur, in which he had submitted that an Arab prince Hamad Zaman has set up hunting camps at Acaro Thar for hunting the internationally protected bird species Hubara Bustard. Nara Town of Khairpur.

Hussain said that when local residents tried to stop him from hunting the protected bird, he threatened dire consequences if he resisted the hunt with the local police and his own personal safety. The District and Sessions Court, Khairpur had summoned the Arab prince and his personal staff along with the SHO of Sora police station on 26 January.

In a related development, Khairpur police on January 20 registered a case against 40 villagers protesting the hunting of protected bird species by foreign guests in Nara and Khipro areas of Khairpur and Sanghar by setting up camps in Babal Bhit and other areas. Apart from threatening the biodiversity of the Thar Desert, their movement was also restricted, making the conduct of daily activities miserable. It is pertinent to mention that earlier, the Ministry of External Affairs had sent a "Recommendation" to the Provincial Governments for the Falconry Season 2021-2022 (Except Protected Areas) with a request to issue necessary permits to foreign guests according to the wildlife. Earlier, a social activist, Nazim Jokhio, was killed allegedly by PPP MPs for protesting bird hunting at Memon Goth in Malir district.
