Angelina Jolie shared a letter from a young Afghan girl to highlight her plight in Taliban-controlled territory
Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie, known for her humanitarian efforts, on Saturday shared a private letter from a young Afghan girl, highlighting her plight in Taliban-controlled territory.
Jolie shared a private letter on Instagram from a young Afghan woman who wrote to her.
To protect the woman's identity, Jolie blurred out parts of the letter in her post, captioning it, "A young woman in #Afghanistan sent me this letter. I'm protecting her identity, but she hasn't been able to go back to school since the Taliban came to power."
Jolie shared, "Now, with women only being arrested for participating in peaceful protests, I may never go out or even be able to speak again," she writes. Because I'm a girl.
The 46-year-old actress then shared another excerpt from the letter.
"I think women have no right to speak up or make their point.
"Women's rights are taken away from them and they are not allowed to do anything in the country," wrote the girl while sharing an example that particularly impressed her.
"A few weeks ago when the Taliban arrested 2 women who raised their voices for women's rights and freedom, I thought, this is the end and I may or may never go out again I am able to speak being a girl."
Jolie ended her post with an important call to action saying, "Please track what is happening in Afghanistan, where young women are being taken out of their homes at night at gunpoint and disappearing." And new restrictions are being imposed on the freedom of women and girls day by day," she wrote.
"Please help make sure they are not forgotten," Jolie urged at the end.
Jolie has previously worked for the UNHCR and has done extensive humanitarian work for Afghan refugees.
