Harvard Theater Group announces Jason Bateman as Man of the Year

Ozark actor Jason Bateman was honored as the Man of the Year by Harvard University's Hasty Pudding Theatricals in Cambridge on Thursday.

Students dressed in elaborate costumes give Bateman a golden pudding pot, but not before mocking his various roles in television and film and even throwing him a toy sword to fight with their little one.

"Fun fact - because of the scheduling of that movie (Teen Wolf Two), Jason didn't technically finish high school," said Nicolas Amador, president of Hesty Pudding Theatricals.

"All for a movie that only got eight out of 100 on Rotten Tomatoes."

To earn his pudding pot, Bateman, 52, had to endure a little extra embarrassment: The members of Pudding sang Bateman's Bangles hit Eternal Flame, (Bateman sang a rendition of the song in 2002's Sweetest Thing) over a frozen banana. Along with acting as his microphone. ,

Thursday evening's festivities presented awards for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic began in 2020.

The final Man of the Year in 2020 was Ben Platt. Past recipients have included Clint Eastwood, Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro and Samuel L. Jackson. The 2022 Woman of the Year Jennifer Garner will be honored on Saturday.

The Arrested Development star also produced and directed Ozark, a popular Netflix series. He is the 55th recipient of the theater troupe's coveted Pudding Pot.

During the roast, Bateman called on his former Arrested Development co-star Will Arnett and actor Sean Hayes, who were cheering him on in the crowd.

Bateman, Arnett and Hayes currently host Smartless, a podcast together, and are beginning a North American tour this month.

After receiving the award, Bateman joked, "I am happy, grateful, humiliated and strangely comfortable."

Bateman earned a Primetime Emmy in 2020 for Outstanding Directing in a Drama for Ozark, two SAG Awards for starring in Ozark, and a Best Actor Golden Globe in 2005 for his portrayal of Michael Bluth in Arrested Development.

Bateman, whose acting career dates back to the early 1980s, has appeared in several television shows and starred in several films including Horrible Boss Movies, Game Night and Identity Thief.

The Man of the Year award has been given since 1967, and the Woman of the Year award was established in 1951. The awards recognize individuals who have made lasting and impactful contributions to the world of entertainment.

When asked where he would display his pudding in connection with his Emmys, Bateman said he would put it right above the coveted television award.

"You can't put pudding in Amy's," Bateman quipped.
