The Cannes Film Festival will hope to revive the industry's hopes with the announcement of yet another star-packed line-up on Thursday.
After a slow return to cinema following the Covid-19 pandemic, the film business will be hoping for a boost on the French Riviera when the 75th edition of the world's premier cinema festival returns from May 17 to 28.
Tom Cruise has already been confirmed for a celebration promoting the world premiere of "Top Gun: Maverick," the sequel to his 1986 blockbuster. Also participating is Tom Hanks, who co-stars in "Elvis" as Colonel Tom Parker, the Rocknroll star's manager.
The latter is the latest spectacle from Australian director Baz Luhrmann, previously titled "Moulin Rouge!" Has illuminated Cannes with and "Gatsby".
The rest of the line-up will be announced Thursday, with 20-odd films competing for the top prize, the Palme d'Or.
The selection committee, which has been working its way through over 2,000 entries in recent weeks, has an uphill task after last year's earlier edition.
