"She loved the side of Johnny we see in the movies—the charismatic, charming, generous one," Breedhoft said. "This is the man she fell in love with.

One of Depps' attorneys, Benjamin Chew, dismissed the abuse allegations and said the actor never hit Heard -- or any other woman.

"In five decades no one has accused Johnny Depp of being violent with a woman," Chew said.

Camille Vasquez, another Depp's attorney, alleged that it was Heard who could have turned violent, "throwing things at him, hitting him."

Chew said allegations of domestic abuse have hurt Depp's career.

"Hollywood studios don't want to deal with the public backlash from hiring someone accused of abuse," he said. "False accusations can destroy careers."

After losing a separate, high-profile defamation case in London in November 2020, Depp filed a defamation complaint against Heard in the United States, which he brought against The Sun for calling him a "wife-beater".
