New report adds to Prince Charles' problems

Documents revealed on Tuesday revealed Prince Charles' problems came to the fore after a new report that he forced John Major's government to secretly change a law allegedly to benefit his land assets .

Citing documents, The Guardian reported that the future king lobbied to exempt some tenants of his £1billion Duchy of Cornwall estate from the Leasehold Reform Act of 1993. The newspaper said the act gave long-term tenants the right to buy their freehold or extend their leases.

The report said Charles took advantage of a controversial convention known as the Prince's Consent that allows the heir to the throne to veto legislation affecting his interests.

The report comes days after he was accused of accepting a suitcase containing €1m in cash from Qatar's former prime minister "HBJ".

Thetime.co.uk reported that the Prince of Wales received three €1m gifts from the Sheikh at undisclosed meetings.

HBJ said to give money in 500 euro banknotes.

Citing sources, the report said royal aides were uneasy, but counted cash at Clarence House.
