Royal family grapples with crisis after 'challenging' pandemic as spending mounts

Britain's royal family spending soars to £102.4 million a year

Britain's royal family has been hit hard by a 'challenging' post-pandemic debt crisis as Buckingham Palace spending continues to mount.

According to details provided by Sir Michael Stevens, the monarch's keeper of the Privy Purse, approximately £102.4 million was spent last year, representing a 17 percent increase over the previous year.

Most of the spending money was spent on the major ten-year program of Buckingham Palace's ongoing renovation.

It was reported that around £54.6 million – a 41 per cent increase in expenses, had been snuffed out by the renovation alone.

The Sovereign Grant report showed a rise in travel costs for the Royal Family from £1.3m to £4.5m as in-person royal visits resumed after the pandemic.

Royal finance expert Norman Baker said: "The government must completely rethink how taxpayer money is allocated to the Royal Family.

"We don't have how the royals use private jets or helicopters, which are all paid for from public purses, and that's not right when ordinary people are struggling."
