Parliamentary panel approves elevation of Justice Ayesha

 ISLAMABAD: The Parliamentary Committee on Appointment of Judges on Wednesday approved the elevation of Justice Ayesha Malik of the Lahore High Court (LHC) as a Supreme Court (SC) judge, Geo News reported.

According to the report, the committee headed by Farooq Hamid Naik decided to approve the elevation of Justice Ayesha. According to Farooq Naik, the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) on January 7 approved Justice Ayesha Malik for her appointment as a Supreme Court judge with five votes out of nine.

He further said that the court is not ending the process of appointing judges on the basis of their seniority, adding that Malik will be the first woman to become a SC judge and "she will benefit the country".

If appointed, Malik will be the first woman judge of the Supreme Court in the judicial history of Pakistan. It is pertinent to mention here that Justice Ayesha Malik ranks fourth in the Lahore High Court in terms of seniority. The Pakistan Bar Council had announced a strike against the appointment of Justice Ayesha Malik.
