How Prince Harry could have taken the title of ''Duke of York'' over Prince Andrew

Prince Harry may be the next person to receive the title Duke of York from Prince Andrew.

According to constitutional expert Ian McMarton, Prince Andrew, who has two daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, cannot pass on his dukedom to his children because it can only be transferred between men.

The title of Duke of York is traditionally held by the second son of the sovereign, who in this case would be Prince Harry after Prince Charles ascended the throne.

Ian told the Express, "Without a son, and under the terms of the patent of letters, under which the Dukedom of York was recreated in 1986, the death of the current duke would merge the title with the crown."

"Historically it is a title given to the second son of a sovereign.

"Arguably, with the accession of Charles, Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, becomes the Sovereign's second son and may become the next Duke of York under custom in addition to being Duke of Sussex.

"The fashion of creating multiple dukedoms during Victoria's reign, however, has died out.

"Furthermore, the custom of new creations has always been linked to marriage and, as has already happened, together with his return from front-line royal duties, his creation as Duke of York does not seem possible, the title available. should be."
