Pakistan records over 7,000 COVID-19 cases for second day in a row as Omicron surges in infections


 ISLAMABAD: Pakistan recorded over 7,000 fresh COVID-19 cases for the second day in a row, as the Omicron edition pushed infections amid a fifth wave of the pandemic across the country, data from the National Command and Operations Center (NCOC) showed. Showed up on Monday morning.

According to the latest NCOC data, 7,195 coronavirus cases were reported during the last 24 hours, after 57,401 tests were conducted across the country, taking the positivity ratio to 12.53%.

After the detection of the new cases, the total cases reached 1.37 million, while eight more deaths were reported from the coronavirus, taking the death toll to 29,105, the figures showed.

In addition, 1,113 patients are on critical care, while 833 more people have recovered from the pandemic in the last 24 hours, taking the total recoveries to 1.269 million, official data showed. Meanwhile, the active cases stand at 76,617.

Last week, the NCOC revised protocols for mosques, allowing only fully vaccinated people to enter places of worship, amid the rising number of coronavirus cases.

The body leading Pakistan's COVID-19 response also announced last Friday that all schools with high COVID-19 positivity ratios would remain closed for a week across the country.
