ISLAMABAD: Lahore High Court (LHC) judge Justice Ayesha Malik on Monday took oath as the first woman judge of the Supreme Court on a historic occasion.
Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed administered the oath of office to Ayesha Malik as a judge of the apex court in a ceremony held at the SC building, while Justice Umar Ata Bandiyal, who has been named as the next top judge of Pakistan, and other SC The judges administered the oath. also attended the ceremony. The ceremony was attended by judges of the Supreme Court, Attorney General of Pakistan, senior lawyers, law officers and officials of the Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan.
After taking oath as the first woman judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Malik has created history in the judicial system of Pakistan.
On this occasion, CJP Ahmed said that no one can take credit for the appointment of Justice Ayesha as a SC judge. "Justice Ayesha has been appointed on the basis of her merit," the CJP said.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Imran Khan congratulated Justice Ayesha Malik on becoming the first woman SC judge. The Prime Minister tweeted, 'I want to congratulate Justice Ayesha Malik on becoming the first woman judge of the Supreme Court. I wish her all the best".
Malik was educated at Harvard University and served as a High Court judge in Lahore for the past two decades. He has been credited with bringing back the patriarchal legal customs under the jurisdiction of his Punjab province. Last year she scrapped a deeply invasive and medically discredited test used to determine a woman's level of sexual experience.
His promotion to the Supreme Court was opposed by the Bar Council and the Association for ignoring the principle of seniority. The Judicial Commission of Pakistan had earlier this month approved the elevation of Justice Malik by a majority of five to four during a heated session that lasted for nearly three-and-a-half hours.
