Sindh CM extends olive branch to MQM-P

Karachi: An inquiry committee was constituted on Thursday to probe the circumstances that led to the use of force by the police against the protesters belonging to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan in front of the CM House and fixed the responsibility for the power show. The committee was tasked to submit its report to the Chief Minister of Sindh within three days. The committee was formed after Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah held a meeting with Sindh Inspector General of Police Mushtaq Meher and Karachi Commissioner Iqbal Memon and discussed the issue over telephone with MQM-P leader Syed Aminul Haque.

The IGP and the commissioner informed the Chief Minister in detail about the violent incident. Expressing displeasure, the CM said that such incidents are unnecessary and should not be repeated in future.

Shah directed the Home Secretary to constitute a committee under him to probe the incident and fix the responsibility so that necessary action can be taken against those responsible for the violence that took place while tackling the protest rally.

The terms of the investigation included why the political party changed the route of the rally from the Press Club to the CM House and hotels where the international cricketers were staying; why the police and administration failed to ban the rally at the Press Club and allowed it to divert its route; details of what caused the police to use force on the protesters and any excessive steps taken by the police to fix responsibility; To determine the extent of injury and responsibility for any resulting injury if the police used force on women protesters; Scuffle with MQM-P's MPA Sadaqat Hussain and fix the responsibility and find out the cause of death of Muhammad Aslam, who was allegedly killed by police action.

Earlier, the CM spoke to MQM-P leader Syed Aminul Haque over phone and expressed displeasure over the incident. He said such incidents were against the state of peace and political harmony in the city.

Shah and Haq agreed that Wednesday's incident should not be given a caste color. Representatives of the Sindh government and the MQM-P condemned the statements portraying it as an ethnic issue, and they mutually agreed to stop making such statements.

The CM requested Haque to allow the government to conduct the postmortem of late MQM-P worker Aslam to ascertain the real cause of death. However, Haque left the matter to the party leaders and the family members of the deceased to decide the matter.

Shah offered Haq to sit together to discuss the new local government law, saying: "If you have some suggestions, please share it with me as we will consider incorporating them into law."

The MQM-P leader said he would also discuss the proposal with his party leaders. He also lauded the Sindh government for taking appropriate action to deal with the Tando Allahyar tragedy.

Besides this, CM Sindh also called up MQM-P's MPA Sadaqat Hussain, who was beaten up by the police, to express his displeasure over the incident and inquired about his health. The CM told the MPA that he has ordered an inquiry into the incident as action would be taken against those responsible.
