Three days have passed since the Russian army invaded Ukraine under the guise of a 'special military operation'. Russian troops are now advancing on Kiev, engaging the Ukrainian army on several fronts.

The United Nations (UN) estimates that around 100,000 Ukrainians have already been displaced by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

There are about 20,000 Indian nationals among those who are now yearning for asylum in Ukraine. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has launched 'Operation Ganga' to bring back Indian nationals including students stranded in Ukraine.

However, a 17-year-old student from Haryana has refused to return home.

The medical student wants to stay in Ukraine until the end of the war to care for her Ukrainian landowner's wife and three children.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, a friend of the student's mother shared this story about a 17-year-old girl who went to Ukraine for her bachelor's degree.

Trapped in Kiev after the invasion, she could not find a place in a hostel and decided to rent a room from a local family.

"My friend [the student's mother] tried hard to contact the embassy to get her out, but the girl doesn't want to come back at such a difficult time, leaving the three kids and their mother alone.

The girl's mother's friend wrote on Facebook, 'Despite the mother's lakhs of efforts, the girl is insisting on staying there till the end of the war.
